Katherine's Maths Learning Story

Learner: Katherine          Learning Coach: Bex Remington          Date: 27 June 2015
Learning Area: iDevelop - Maths: Measuring
Learning Observed
Katherine’s maths group has been looking at measuring and how units of measurement work. During this session we were looking at how to make estimates and measure using object found around the habitat.  The objects we decided to use were cubes and popsicle sticks.  Katherine was able to tell the group that we used these because they were the same size and stayed the same size regardless of how many we used.  Katherine had to estimate how many cubes the arm length was and how many popsicle sticks the leg was. When we began measuring she was able to talk about how we don’t start measuring half way down, we need to start right on the edge of it.  She was able to make an estimate knowing how long one cube or one popsicle stick was and imaging what more would look like.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Katherine is developing her capabilities in measurement.  She is able to discuss her answers showing that she understands language, symbols and text. During the group session Katherine was able to talk to other group members and help those who needed it which demonstrated participation and contribution and relating to others.
Next Learning Steps
  • Explore measuring other items using a mixture everyday objects
  • Begin using formal measurement units
  • Estimate using formal measurement units before measuring
